I see that the boldface+colon creates a stronger hierarchy, it creates a trianglebefore the containing group name, but I don’t see anything about this in the manual.

I don’t think it’s the project formatting “which you get when you end a line with a color” that’s creating the hierarchy. Instead I think you have text tab indented under that project. Checkout the getting started screencast and I think that will clear things up.
