Behavior diffs between Bike 1.x vs Bike 2.x

I upgraded to Bike 2.x (311) recently…I love it, should’ve done it sooner…but also a few (newb, sorry) questions:

The Bike 1.x “Move to Heading” displayed a picker with lots of detail level rows; I think I originally configured that using the gear icon (“An empty path allows all rows”); I routinely used that feature to move things around my outline.

Anyways, assuming that the Bike 2.x equivalent is “Move To” and “Move to Row”:

  • What is the distinction between these two options? Is “Move To” intended to target headings (or groups), and…“Move To Row” is any row in the outline?
  • Is there any way to configure the “path-filter” for these features like v1.x?
  • What is the meaning of the leading “hyphen” in the dialog box for these two features? The “Move To Row” defaults to a leading hyphen, “Move To” does not, other than that, the two features seem to function identically.

Lastly…in Bike 1.x, “move to” would…move the row as expected…but the document’s position and focus remained unchanged…handy for when I want to, e.g., move several individual tasks from yesterday to today. In Bike 2.x the position is changed to…wherever I moved the task…so then I have navigate to (e.g., yesterday) to continue reviewing tasks, marking complete or moving them.

Is there any way to configure what the document’s position (the cursor location) is after a move operation.

Thanks again for a great product!

Bike 2 changes this a bit. You can no longer configure the target rows directly (but you can indirectly via sidebar config).

Instead there are two options

  • Outline > Move To… (Command-\)
A search box opens to move the selected rows to one of your sidebar locations.

This moves to a sidebar location which includes:

  • Locations defined by extensions such as Home and Today
  • Rows that match “Index”, which defaults to headings, though you can configure the index query using outline path
  • Specific Pinned rows that you drag/drop to the sidebar
  • Outline > Move To Row… (Option-Command-\)
A search box opens to move the selected rows beneath any other row in the outline.

This alternative allows you to target any row in your outline. Also note, both commands really bring up the same picker. You switch from sidebar targets to all row targets by starting your search with -, Move to Row… just pre-fills that - for you.

Yes, if you hold down the Control key, these “Move To” menu items switch to “Send To” behavior. I was about to point you to doc page on this, but it turns out it’s undocumented! Will add that soon on this page.

And turns out I’m not as far behind as I thought. I had documented those variant, just haven’t redeployed the guide in a while  Will get there eventually.
