Attachments

I’m very excited about the upcoming attachments support – it sounds like exactly what I hoped we would get.

I don’t run the beta, though, so have a few questions.

  • Are large numbers of attachments feasible? Bike documents are currently tiny, but could potentially be huge if there are loads of images inside. Will this impact performance?
  • Are attachments organised in any way? Folders? Sub-folders?
  • My particular use case is a daily journal – my current Bike file has 12 years of daily entries. Could I add a picture to every day, or would this be ridiculous? If I wanted to do this, would I be better breaking my journal into one Bike file per year?

Can’t wait…

Bike’s attachment format is pretty much just a folder that contains a Bike file and then the attachment files. So they are not organized on the file system, other then all being put in same directory.

Performance should be good with many, but at this point I haven’t tested that case. And there are likely a few issues to fix.

The basic design is that attachments are not loaded until they are shown in the viewport and then attachments are unloaded when they go out of viewport. I gota check on unloading part, not sure that is working… but it should be possible to make it work

Last, by default attachments just show icon and file name. In that case they don’t load at all, but you can quickly show them with quicklook.

So if I create a massive, ridiculous, mega-file – that would probably be okay? Even when syncing to your (one day) iOS app?

I guess it all depends on mega file  You’ll always be able to create a file to big for Bike if you work at it hard enough. But long novel sizes with lots of different images I “think” should work. Hard to promise on these things though for specific cases. Best is to test.

That latest Bike preview release has a few fixes that make attachments scale much better in memory and general performance. Thousands of images was working well for me.

Thanks for looking into this. I can’t wait to try it…

…soon?

Getting there, but no date yet.
