Adding top-level entry at the end of current document

When I’m trying to append an item to the end of the file, there’s no fast way to put it on the top, as the last existing item’s indentation stands in the way, and I need to press shift+tab several times to get to the most left position. Is this fixable, or is there a shortcut for that? Thanks!

I think you just need to hold down the Option key when pressing enter to create the new item. That would opt you out of the auto-indent behavior.
