Just stumbled across FoldNotes. I haven’t tried the beta (of FoldNotes or Bike!) but it looks super interesting, especially this.
Developer of FoldNotes here, and a long-time Bike fan and member of this forum. I added this feature because I wanted to edit Bike files on iOS too. On iOS it’s limited to opening a single file, but on Mac you can list an entire directory of Bike files, sort them how you like, and search across them using saved regex searches. Happy to answer any questions!
Hi! I am enjoying FoldNotes as a portable access point to my Bike file/s - I like that the app offers super-clean rendering, and Folding capability one touch away (of course! it’s written into the app name
).
My main caveat is it takes me several presses to actually open my default Bike folder and then default Bike file. Since my Bike file is currently the only destination of FoldNotes, it seems “a lot of extra stepping past things I don’t need to see in order to get to my starting point”.
This issue is compounded by the fact that if I edit a Bike file in FoldNotes, the next time I launch FoldNotes that recently edited Bike file has disappeared from the Recent Files screen, so now I have to go fish for it in iCloud. Not ideal, but seems to me that a fix would be straightforward.
Can you suggest or offer a way I can directly open a default Bike file on launch please?
FYI I am already on the MacOS beta and intend to purchase when you announce pricing!
Thanks!
Thanks — glad the rendering and folding are working for you.
On finding your outline: once you’ve chosen your Bike folder it stays as its own entry in the sidebar, so it’s that entry and then the file — no need to go back through iCloud each time.
The bigger help is in the update just landing in V 1.2.3 . The Bike file list now shows a task-progress ring against each outline — done versus remaining, red if something’s overdue — and for .biked documents it shows the pictures the document carries. An outline reads as a document at a glance rather than as a filename and a date, which makes picking the right one much quicker.
On the Mac there’s also a new experimental Bike Board: every task and attributed row from every outline you’ve attached, grouped into columns by status, priority, due date or flag, and draggable between them. It can also set FoldNotes properties — your own Single Select or Rating values — on a Bike row, written as ordinary Bike attributes. That one’s aimed at people juggling several outlines, so it may matter less to you with one, but it’s there.
Thanks for being on the beta.
Ah OK. It took a moment to recognize that I first need to do a left-swipe after launch in order to expose the Notes list.
Looking forward to the update although tbh my tasks are pretty binary - “active” and “done” are the 2 modes i use. Any tasks that have multiple stages are broken down to these 2 states rather than worrying about what I meant by “in progress” when i last touched the project.
I have imported my Obsidian vault into FoldNotes and intend to create a solid bridge between Bike (which will hold my tasks) and FoldNotes (which will hold my projects and snippets and other resources not strictly defined as tasks). Red for overdue is good/appreciated.
The current version of FoldNotes is displaying all the timestamp information in light grey text and confusing the display, i will go through the settings and see if i can turn it off, but if it’s inadvertent you may want to look into that.
Will check out the Bike Board - i have a couple of projects that could be organized thus I think.
The timestamps issue is noted and I the next update for Mac and iOS 1.2.4 has them filtered out. You will also be able to select which of the other status attributes you would like to display. Bike is in beta and so is FoldNotes so expect occasional divergence issue until they both settle.
No worries!
Art — Until FoldNotes next release ships these attributes will continue to show in the FoldNotes Editor. They are created by Bike whenever you have the setting “Save row created and modified attributes” set to on in Bike. Our next release hides them, but they are useful if present to see when rows were created and modified and I will add a way in FoldNotes to search for them.
Sounds good!
