Can no longer open a Bike file: help!

I was working on a Bike file earlier today. Now I can’t open it. No idea what has happened. I can see the document contents when I do Preview or command-I.

How can I open my document again? It’s a critical file, and I don’t have time to completely recreate it. Attached is the message I get if I double-click the file or if I try to open within Bike.

Further note: I can open the file in TextEdit. Loses all formatting, but the content is there. However, if I copy/paste into Bike all is fine at first. I have to redo things like headers and highlights. But then if I close the file and try to reopen the same thing happens … can not be opened. I’m guessing it’s something to do with some content somewhere but can’t imagine what it is.

I’m happy to take a look if it’s shareable. You can email to me at jesse@hogbaysoftware.com. You should also be able to rename to file extension .html and open in web browser.

Just sent the problem Bike file over to you. Thanks!

There must be something I did to create the problem … but I can’t figure out what it might be.

Somehow an invalid character showed up at the start of this row:

<p>Yes, that would be a powerful duo</p>

Maybe from copy paste? Anyway I just noticed that I can paste that invalid char into Bike, and save… but then get same problem when I try to reopen the document. I know similar problem came up in Bike 1.x code, maybe I never ported that over, I’ll take a look.

Oh, thanks so much for the explanation!

Much of the content in the document was copy/pasted from a PDF I had read. But …. that particular portion is text I added by hand within Bike. So it’s super strange that anything I did with typing would have caused an invalid character. Maybe I accidentally did something weird with the keyboard.

Well keep an eye on it coming back. And if course if you figure how to reproduce it, :). Good news is I don’t think this problem will loose information, but issue only appears when you try to reload the file, and then it’s relatively easy to fix.
